To air on Sunday 3rd November in the UK and Monday 4th November in the US
The TV series ‘His Dark Materials’, based on the hugely popular trilogy of books of the same name, will premiere on Sunday 3rd November in the UK (on BBC 1), and on Monday 4th November in the US (on HBO).
With the critical and financial failings of the first attempt to bring Philip Pullman’s books to film (‘The Golden Compass’), many fans will be keenly awaiting this latest version. A large number of production companies are now transforming popular books and franchises into series form (‘Game of Thrones’, ‘The Witcher’, ‘Pet Sematary’, ‘Catch 22’, ‘American Gods’, the list goes on), with the flexibility in pacing of story and the convenience of watching at home proving to be a big hit with viewers. Fans are also hoping that this translates into a quality viewing experience.
The first series will consist of 8 episodes – each shown on a weekly basis – and will star James McAvoy as Lord Asriel, Dafne Keen as Lyra Belacqua and Amir Wilson as Will Parry. It aims to cover the first book of the trilogy, titled ‘Northern Lights’. Series 2, based on the second book, ‘The Subtle Knife’, is currently being filmed with an unknown release date.

The 2007 film, The Golden Compass, strayed from the source material in a few significant ways, but there is more hope for this series. It’s believed that the screenwriters have tried to stay as true as possible to the books in order to fully realise this incredible world.
Only time will tell, but, to keep your anticipation levels high, here’s the full trailer for the first series:
